Reading Fiction: The Dog Ate My Homework

Build third and fourth graders’ reading fluency with this short story! This story follows Kim, a student who made excuses for not turning in her homework and has to cancel her weekend plans to catch up. As students read through this one-page fiction passage, they will focus on reading with speed, accuracy, and expression.

Reading fluency is important to practice, as it helps improve learners’ comprehension and lays the foundation for reading longer, more complex texts. Additionally, this passage includes dialogue and a nonlinear series of events for students to analyze.
