Scenic Byways: Scale and Distance on Route 66

Buckle up for a road trip along Route 66! Route 66 is an iconic American highway that runs from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. To start, students will label key cities along the route. Then, learners must use the map scales to answer questions about the distances between cities.

Created for fourth through eighth graders, this activity will challenge students to label a map and calculate distance from a map scale. Learners must think creatively to determine the best way to measure non-linear distances and plan a road trip! This worksheet will also familiarize students with midwestern, southwestern, and western states.
