Worksheet

Short vs. Long Vowel Sort

Become a phonics superstar with this first- and second-grade worksheet! Students will read each word and focus on its vowel sound. If the word contains a short vowel sound, learners are asked to color the star blue. If the word uses a long vowel sound, students will color the star yellow.

This activity will give early readers a deeper understanding of short and long vowel sounds, leading to stronger reading and spelling skills. Identifying specific vowel sounds will benefit students as they begin to read longer words, recognize vowel teams, and learn about syllables.
