Sound Test: Underwater

Make a splash with this hands-on first, second, and third grade science worksheet about sound and underwater vibrations! Students will work with a trusted adult to construct a simple hydrophone from a plastic bottle and balloon, then use it to listen to objects dropped into water.

This sound science worksheet gives students an opportunity to explore how sound travels through water and how different objects can produce different sounds. Working with a partner, learners compare the sounds of a paper clip, marble, eraser, and rock, then choose a new object to test, record whether its sound is loud or quiet, and compare their results with other objects.

Through this simple science experiment, students practice making predictions, observing results, and thinking about sound as a form of energy produced by vibrations. The hands-on investigation provides an engaging introduction to waves and sound while encouraging students to explore how objects behave and sound in water.
