Spelling Practice: 1-1-1 Doubling

Double your spelling skills with the help of this worksheet on inflectional endings! Students will reinforce their memory of the spelling rule that dictates whether the final consonant of a word should be doubled when a vowel suffix is added. In the first seven problems, students will choose the correct spelling of a word to complete each sentence. Then, students will add suffixes to seven base words, making sure to double the final consonant when appropriate.

This worksheet was designed to strengthen third and fourth graders’ knowledge of spelling patterns, allowing them to confidently add vowel suffixes like -ed, -er, and -est to words. This fundamental spelling will support students as they learn more about morphology and complex spelling patterns.
