Summer Spelling Words: Dot the Sounds

Don’t sweat spelling practice—this first- and second-grade worksheet makes it easy! For each of six words from a summer spelling list, learners will determine how many individual sounds are used in the word. Then, students will fill in the matching number of suns using a dot marker or crayon. Lastly, learners are asked to write the word at the end of the row.

This activity will build fundamental reading and writing skills among young readers. Identifying the individual sounds, or phonemes, in words can help students become better spellers and readers. This also strengthens phonological awareness, which boosts early literacy.
