Worksheet

Voices From the Past: Shirley Chisholm

Learn about the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress! In this worksheet, students will read a brief passage about Shirley Chisholm’s life and achievements. Then, they will read and analyze one of her most famous quotes, answering questions about what she meant, who she was speaking to, and why her words were—and still are—important. Students will also consider how they might speak up for themselves and others.

This worksheet is designed to support fourth and fifth graders as they learn vital history skills such as interpreting the words of an author or speaker and considering how a quote connects to the historical context. It’s a perfect activity for Black History Month or Women’s History Month!
