What's the Scoop? Supporting Topic Sentences

Get the scoop on supporting details with this helpful worksheet! To begin, learners will read each topic sentence and determine which of the three supporting details is the best. Then, students are asked to write a supporting detail of their own for an ice cream-themed topic sentence.

Knowing how to identify relevant details can help third graders strengthen their own arguments in persuasive and opinion writing pieces. This exercise will help students recognize that while a sentence may be related to the subject, it may not work as a strong supporting detail. By supporting their main idea and keeping their sentences topical, students can become more effective writers and communicators.
