Winter Break: Dependent and Independent Clauses

Weather too chilly to go out? Stay in and learn about clauses in this wintery worksheet! Learners will read definitions of dependent and independent clauses with examples. They can also learn about how these clauses are used in complex sentences with subordinating conjunctions. Then, students will read 10 seasonal sentences and identify the independent clause, dependent clause, and subordinating conjunction in each one.

Perfect for middle school students, this activity is a good choice for improving learners’ confidence with sentence structure and grammar skills. The ability to identify the elements in complex sentences can help students as they learn to write their own sophisticated, varied sentences.
