Winter Spelling Words: Dot the Sounds

Embrace the snowy season by sounding out winter words! For each word from a winter spelling list, students must first figure out how many sounds are in the word. Then, learners will use a dot marker or crayon to fill in the matching number of snowflakes. Lastly, students will write the word next to the row of snowflakes.

This first- and second-grade activity will help students identify individual phonemes, which can build phonological awareness in young readers. Isolating the sounds in words can strengthen students’ reading and spelling skills as they become more aware of unique letter sounds.
