Men and kids are both strangely obsessed with duct tape, so this project makes for the perfect activity for you and your child to do together to create a  great gift for Dad this Father's Day. Your child will get to play with the duct tape and Dad will get a wallet that all of his buddies will surely envy.

What You Need:

  • Duct tape
  • Scissors

What You Do:

  1. Start by helping your child rip off a strip of tape about 12 inches long.  Lay it in front of him horizontally with the sticky side facing up.
  2. Tear another strip of duct tape of equal length and lay it horizontally as well, sticky-side down on top of your first strip of duct tape, so that it covers the lower half of the first strip of tape.  At this point you should have a piece of duct tape (made up of two separate pieces) that is still 12 inches across (laying horizontally) but is now thicker than the original piece of duct tape.
  3. Fold the length of the top of your first strip of tape down over the part of the second strip that is covering the lower half to seal the top edge.
  4. Flip the whole thing over, and tear a strip of tape of the same length again (12 inches) to cover the exposed, sticky bottom half of the second strip of tape, in the same way that you covered the first strip of duct tape. You do not need to fold the exposed top edge over this time 0because there will not be one, as you will be covering the length of exposed sticky tape each time you attach a new piece to the cover the bottom half.
  5. Flip and repeat, keeping the duct tape rectangle you are making 12 inches across, but each time adding another layer to the bottom.  Continue in this manner until your duct tape rectangle is about 12 inches across and 8 to 8 1/2 inches down (or vertically).
  6. With the last piece of duct tape, fold the exposed sticky side up so that the rectangle is sealed at the bottom edge as well. Trim the side edges to make them neat, so that the rectangle now measures about 10-11 inches across but still about 8 to 8 1/2 inches vertically.
  7. Keeping the rectangle horizontal with the longer sides running across, fold the rectangle in half from left to right, like you would a book, so that the rectangle you now have is still approximately 8 or so inches up and down but now measures about 5 inches or so across.
  8. Use duct tape to seal the bottom edge and the open right side of the rectangle (the folded seam should be on the left) to create a pocket.
  9. Fold in half again, this time from bottom to top, so that you're rectangle now measures approximately 5 inches across and approximately 4 inches vertically.
  10. You can tape the open right and left sides to seal them and create a smaller wallet, or you can leave them open, to make a larger wallet that is more like a pocket book.
  11. You've just made a simple duct tape wallet!

This is definitely something you and your child can do together, however this project can be a little tricky, so don't be afraid to be more hands-on with this particular activity.  Dad will be in for a real treat!
