based on 8 ratings

Need a great way to visualize goals for the New Year? Your child can draw a self-portrait of herself, with half of it illustrating who she is now and the other half illustrating who she wants to be. What You Need:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • A mirror

What You Do:

  1. Encourage your child to brainstorm her goals for the coming year as well as her accomplishments from the past year. However, instead of writing them down, she is going to draw them into her self-portrait!
  2. She can begin drawing her self-portrait by looking in the mirror and drawing her face to the best of her ability on a blank sheet of paper. Encourage ger to include as much detail as possible.
  3. She will then draw a line down the center of paper, so that the face is divided in half vertically. The first half will represent who she was in the past year and the other half will be who she hopes to be in the coming year.
  4. On either side of the paper, draw objects or symbols that represent accomplishments of the past year and goals for the coming year. For example, if she wants to study harder next year, then draw a book on the “future side” of the self-portrait. If she made the soccer team last year, draw a ball on the “past” side etc.
  5. Using the colored pencils have her color in the rest of her portrait, making a finished product that you can hang on the fridge or in her room as a reminder of all the wonderful things she has done and plans to do in the New Year!
