An Inventive Way to Practice Cursive
Topics: Second Grade, Writing
Most parents wince at memories of practicing cursive. Though cursive has lost some of its popularity in the professional world, most experts agree it's still an important skill to learn. Here's an activity that taps into your child's creative thinking abilities while helping him practice his handwriting.
Materials: Pencil
Paper
Play: Create a list of real-life places and ask, “What gadget would you invent to make things easier or better in/on (insert the name of the place)?” For example: What gadget would you invent to make a barn better for cows? This simple question starts some marvelous ideas flowing with many twists and turns. Other familiar places might include:
• The kitchen
• The school cafeteria
• The soccer or baseball field
• The train or subway station
• The highway
• An airplane
• A car or truck
• A farm
• The garage
• The doctor’s office
• An office
• A restaurant
• The post office
• The grocery store
• The ocean
