Make Mom a Love Box!

What You Need:

  • Unpainted wooden box (find these at craft stores, such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Wood glue
  • Decorations, such as wooden letters, buttons, plastic gems, etc.
  • Paper
  • Pen or markers

What You Do:

  1. Let your child start by painting the box. It’s better to limit the color options and make the rule that each box can only be painted one color. Otherwise you end up with the painted equivalent of scribble-scrabble; sticking with a single color results in a much more attractive box. Then later, after the paint dries, if he would still like to paint on polka dots or paint Mom's name, he'll have a clean, solid background.
  2. While the paint dries on the box, let your child paint any decorative elements for the box. He might want to paint the letters for MAMA or add wooden flowers. He can even find some of his favorite pictures with Mom to cut out and paste on the box.
  3. Once the paint is dry, he can attach the decorations he's just painted and any other decorations he would like. Some ideas: cover the box in buttons; paint large and small hearts on the box; add a fluffy pom-pom to the center of the box.
  4. While the decorations dry, he can work on the part that is bound to be Mom's favorite part of the gift: a handwritten list of things he loves about his mom to put inside of the box. Mom will cherish that list forever!
