Passing judgements and making assumptions about others can cause disconnect in relationships and communities. In this social emotional learning activity, your child will explore how to break through assumptions and then create a colorful bracelet that represents unity. Designed with fourth and fifth grade learners in mind, this activity will help children build important self-awareness, social awareness, mindfulness, and relationship skills.
What You Need:
- Unity Bracelet worksheet
- "Do We Underestimate Kids? – Reverse Assumptions" video (YouTube)
- Beads
- Three different colors of string

- Ask your child, "What are assumptions?"
- Share the following definition of assumption: "Something that is accepted as true or as certain, without proof."
- Ask your learner, "How can assumptions affect relationships? How can assumptions affect our community?"
- Show them the "Do We Underestimate Kids? – Reverse Assumptions" video.
- Afterwards, ask, "What can we learn from this video? How can we break through assumptions?"
