Activity
Make a Radio
Music can have an enormous impact on us and the way we feel. In this social emotional learning activity, your child will listen to their favorite song, first while remaining still and mindful, and then again while moving to the beat. Using guiding questions, children will explore how the song makes them feel. Then, together you and your child will get crafty to make a radio out of cardboard!
What You Need:
- Your child's favorite song
- Radio Box Craft worksheet
What You Do:
- Ask your child, "What is your favorite song? Why do you like this song?"
- Have them sit up nice and tall.
- Invite them to close their eyes or look down on the floor.
- Ask them to take a few deep breaths into their belly.
- Tell your child that you will now play their favorite song.
- Ask them to stay as still as they can, and to notice how the song feels in their body.
- Play your child's favorite song for one minute.
- Ask them some of the following questions as they listen:
- What do you notice about how you feel?
- Do you feel warmth in your heart?
- What do you feel in your belly?
- Do you feel excited?
- Do you feel calm?
- Do you feel energized?
- What do you feel in your body? Where do you feel this in your body?
- Do you feel the impulse to move?
- Can you still stay still?
- Stop the music.
- Ask your learner what they notice and what this experience was like for them.
- Explain that you will play the song for them again, and this time they may move and dance.
- Play the song for one minute.
- Ask them to notice how they feel in their body as they now move to the song. Do different beats make them feel differently in their body?
- Pause the song.
- Ask them what they notice and how they feel.
- Take out the Radio Box Craft worksheet, and read through its instructions.
- Now, roll up your sleeves to work together on making your own radio.
- Look up some images, and share with your child what radios looked like when you were growing up.
- Together, make your radio box craft to share with the rest of the family!
