Red, White, and Blue! Shooting Star Craft

What You Need:

  • White paper plate
  • Red construction paper
  • Blue construction paper
  • White paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife and cutting board (for adult use only!)
  • Tape
  • Star stickers (optional)
  • Yarn or string (optional)

What You Do:

  1. Help your child draw, and then cut a star out of the paper plate.
  2. This step is for adults only! Working on the cutting board to protect your work surface, use the craft knife to cut a series of slits in the star. Space the slits approximately ½ inch apart.
  3. Use the scissors to help your child cut several ½ inch wide strips of red construction paper. Repeat with the blue construction paper.
  4. Starting from the back of the star, help your child weave a red strip of paper through the slits in the star. Pass the strip through the first slit, over the strip of white paper and back down through the next slit. Keep weaving until you reach the top of the star.
  5. Next, use a blue strip of paper and start from the front of the star. Working beside the red strip, weave this blue strip back and forth through the star.
  6. Repeat steps 3 and 5 until you have filled the weaving area of the star with red and blue strips of paper. Line them up and, if necessary, tape the ends down to hold them in place.
  7. Decorate the streamers with small star stickers for a bit of glitz.
  8. If you want to hang the star up, add a piece of yarn or twine to the top of the star so that you can hang it.
