Teaching Rhyming with The Bear in Despair

What You Need:

What You Do:

  1. Hand your child a piece of paper and a pencil.
  2. Explain that you want her to listen closely to the story you're about to read.
  3. Begin reading The Bear in Despair with your child.
  4. After each paragraph pause and ask your child to write down every word that she remembers. Also, ask your child if she heard any words that are unfamiliar to her.
  5. After you're finished reading the story, review the words that she has written down.
  6. Discuss a few of the reasons why rhyming is used in poetry and literature with your child.
  7. Ask your child if she thinks it's easier to remember what happens in the story because of the rhymes.
