Voting Buttons
So your kindergartener still has a few years left till he can vote—that doesn't mean he can't get excited to do his civic duty! Encourage your future voter and current patriot to get in on election fever by making his very own voting button.
What You Need:
- Empty can
- Cardboard
- White card stock (white, red, and blue sheets)
- Red card stock
- Blue card stock
- Glue
- Pin back
- Pencil
- Red marker
- Blue marker
- Black marker
What You Do:
- Have your child place the opening of the empty can on the white card stock.
- Let him use a pencil to trace the can.
- Have him trace the same circle on the cardboard.
- Use scissors to cut both circles out.
- Help him draw a slightly larger shape on the red card stock. This shape should not be strictly circular. Give it slight waves so that it resembles a bunched ribbon. Cut this shape out.
- Help your child cut an upside-down "V" into the blue card stock. This piece will be the ribbon of his voting button.
- Have your child glue the white circle on top of the cardboard circle.
- What should your child's voting button say? Brainstorm together. He can cheer on a candidate or stick to a general phrase like "Future voter!"
- Have your child glue the cardboard circle on top of the red wavy-shaped circle.
- Let him glue the blue card stock to the bottom of the red circle. The tips of the blue "ribbon" should be pointing away from the button.
- Have him use the red and blue markers to decorate his button with stars.
- Finally, glue the pin back to the cardboard.
- Attach the completed voting button to your proud future voter's shirt. Now he's ready to show off his patriotic pride!
