Washi Tape Patterns

What You Need:

  • Variety of Washi tape
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors

What You Do:

  1. Ask your child to fold a sheet of construction paper in half vertically, so it's thin and tall.
  2. Have your child cut the tall card into 2-3 equal sections, depending on how big they would like the final cards to be.
  3. Invite your child to experiment with putting tape in different ways on each card. For example, one card might have diagonal stripes, while another is woven and the third is short tears with rough edges.
  4. Depending on the age and ability of your child, complex and unique patterns can be created. Create a family challenge by seeing who can come up with the most unique, complex, and interesting pattern! Invite your child to explain their pattern to you verbally.
  5. When your child is finished, encourage them to write a message or draw an illustration in each card and send them to loved ones.
  6. Help older children create longer messages in an accurate letter format including a heading, date, body, and closing. Allow younger children to explain their pictures so you can write down their descriptions for all to enjoy!
