EL Support Lesson
Learning to Rhyme
Objectives
Academic
Students will be able to recognize and produce simple rhymes.
Language
Students will be able to identify rhyming word pairs using visual supports.
Introduction
(5 minutes)- Gather the class together for a read-aloud.
- Preview the text Llama Llama Time to Share by doing a brief picture walk with the class.
- Introduce the concept of rhyming by saying, "When two words end in the same way, they rhyme. Listen to these two words: 'ball' and 'call.' Do you hear how they end the same? Today we will be listening for more rhyming words as we read a book about Little Llama."
Building academic language
Word
(10 minutes)- Read aloud the text and pause to identify and write the rhyming words on the board (e.g., "trains," "planes").
- After you finish reading, ask students to reflect on what happened in the story. Have students turn and talk to share with a partner what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
- Explain that you will now re-read the story, and this time, students should listen for words that rhyme. When they hear a rhyming pair, they should clap their hands.
- Re-read the story and pause when students clap. Note the rhyming word pairs.
Sentence
(10 minutes)- Display the Time to Rhyme #1 worksheet and explain that students will be looking at each row and circling or coloring in the rhyming word pairs.
- Go over the words on the worksheet to check student understanding for each vocabulary word.
- Pass out the worksheets to each student to complete independently.
Discourse
(5 minutes)- Invite students to join a partner and check their worksheets to compare the rhyming pairs they found.
- Encourage students to practice using the rhyming word pairs in silly sentences with their partner.
Additional EL adaptations
Beginning
- Provide students with individual copies of the read aloud text to use as a reference.
- Work with a small group of students to match additional rhyming word pairs using visual aides. Have students practice coming up with additional words.
Advanced
- Have students work with a partner to come up with rhyming word pairs to use in silly sentences.
Formative Assessment of Academic Language
(2 minutes)- Throughout the lesson, informally assess whether students can identify rhyming pairs by noting and questioning the students at work.
- Collect student work samples to assess if students were able to accurately match rhyming word pairs.
Review and closing
(3 minutes)- Close by reviewing the concept of a rhyming pair by having students share a word that rhymes with a provided word (using pictures or objects) as an exit ticket.
