Hexagon Resources

If your student is starting to learn how to recognize and work with geometric shapes, introducing them to the hexagon is a good way to challenge their shape skills. Hexagons are polygons that have 6 sides. To learn more about the properties of hexagons, scroll to the bottom of the page. If your child is ready to tackle these geometric shapes, explore our worksheets and games.

Learn More About Hexagons

Hexagons can be intimidating for your child, especially if they are just starting to work shapes other than a rectangle, triangle, or circle. To help you help your child get a better understanding of hexagons before they start working with them, we’ve listed some properties below:

Properties
A regular hexagon has:
  • 6 straight sides that form a closed shape
  • Interior angles of 120 degrees and exterior angles of 60 degrees
  • Area of approximately 2.598 × s2, where s is the length of a side
  • Opposite sides that are parallel to each other
Irregular Hexagons While your child will mainly work with regular hexagons, there are also some irregular hexagons that they might encounter in math. If any of the properties of a regular hexagon are not met, the hexagon is classified as irregular. Two irregular hexagons are the concave and convex hexagons:
  • Concave Hexagon: Any hexagon with at least one internal angle greater than 180 degrees
  • Convex Hexagon: Any hexagon with no internal angles greater than 180 degrees
Now that your child has an introduction to hexagons, have them try out the exercises on this page or move on over to our Geometry page to see more examples of how shapes like hexagons can be used in math!
