Students are introduced to this concept in third grade with elapsed time word problems—an example of how math is used in daily life. “She was 10 minutes late to the exam!” “I waited in line for two hours!” “We were stuck in traffic for 45 minutes.” People comment on elapsed time all the, well, time. The Learning Library implements a variety of sources to help teach kids how to calculate elapsed time.

Elapsed time word problems become a focus in third grade. A guided lesson on measurements, Measurement 1, teaches kids the practical skills of recording data, how to take measurements and how to track time. The teacher-created lesson utilizes various tools such as number lines and word problems challenge students in different ways. Online exercises offer multiple choice quiz-style elapsed time challenges. One exercise is specific to subtraction word problems and the other is specific to addition word problems so students can concentrate on one component at a time.
