Worksheet

Best Word Wins: Verbs

In this worksheet, the best verb wins! Fifth graders will read each sentence, then determine which of the three verbs is the strongest. The verbs communicate the same thing, but only one provides the best imagery!

Strong verbs can make students’ writing more precise and descriptive, allowing for more effective and engaging communication—a puppy scampering through a field provides more detail to a reader than a puppy running through a field. This practice encourages students to be more intentional with their word choice, which can also help expand their vocabularies.
