Dot It: Short u Word Families

Build short u word families with this hands-on activity for early readers! Students will review the three pictures in each row to determine if they are part of the highlighted word family. If the picture belongs, learners are asked to color in the dot below the image with a dot marker or crayon. This worksheet focuses on the short u word families -um, -ug, -ut, and -un.

Geared toward preschoolers and kindergarteners, this activity allows students to build phonemic awareness without relying on letter recognition. Learners must segment each word and isolate its phonemes in order to figure out if it’s a part of the same word family. This is a foundational skill for reading, writing, and identifying rhyming words.

Start from the beginning of this series with Dot It: Short a Word Families, or focus on this vowel sound with Word Families Sort: Short u.
