Reader's Theater Fluency Practice: Davy and His Amazing Talking Dog

Meet Davy and his talking dog in this silly reader’s theater practice! The five-page story focuses on Davy, who befriends a stray dog and realizes he can “talk.” Davy and his friends use the dog’s talent to entertain audiences and raise money to leave their orphanage. This reader’s theater involves 12 characters, including three narrators, the group of four friends, and the dog.

This script was written with third- and fourth-grade readers in mind. As students perform the text, they will be able to engage more deeply with the characters and plot, allowing for stronger comprehension. Learners can also focus on expression and delivery as they read aloud, helping to build confidence.
