Sort and Spell: Short u Word Families

Have fun sorting and spelling short u words in this kindergarten and first-grade worksheet! Learners will cut and paste each of eight images into their correct word family. The four word families each focus on short u sounds, such as -ug and -un. Then, students are prompted to write the word beside the image.

This hands-on activity will help early readers boost their encoding skills and build phonological awareness. Isolating the ending sounds of each CVC word to sort them into word families will familiarize students with phonemes and rhyming words. Learners must also pay attention to each letter sound in order to spell the word, sharpening their letter-sound recognition.
