Use the Benchmark One Half to Compare Fractions With Unlike Denominators

Practice comparing fractions by using a benchmark in this fourth-grade worksheet! A benchmark is a number that can be used to compare two fractions. When students compare fractions to the benchmark, they can also see how the fractions compare to one another. For each of six problems, learners will start by comparing each fraction to the benchmark one half. Then, they will determine if the first fraction is greater than, less than, or equal to the second.

By comparing fractions to a benchmark, students do not need to find common denominators or create equivalent fractions. This strategy instead prompts learners to use mathematical reasoning, mental math, and their conceptual understanding of fractions to compare fractions.
