Use the Benchmark One Whole to Compare Fractions With Unlike Denominators

Learn to compare fractions by using a benchmark with this helpful worksheet! A benchmark is a simple number that can be used to compare two fractions, such as one whole. Students will compare each fraction to the benchmark, then use those results to compare the two fractions. To practice, there are six pairs of fractions for students to compare.

This strategy allows fourth graders to compare fractions without needing to find common denominators or converting to equivalent fractions. Using a benchmark encourages students to apply mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding of fractions, helping to strengthen mental math skills. Learners will also reinforce that improper fractions are fractions greater than one.
