The only challenge to making cookie ornaments is making them last long enough to decorate your tree. Make sure to make a big batch – some to gobble right away, and some to hang from pretty ribbons.

What You Need:

  • Refrigerated cookie dough
  • A rolling pin
  • Holiday-shaped cookie cutters
  • Cookie sheets
  • Colored sugar, silver dragees, and prepared frosting in tubes
  • A straw
  • Pretty ribbon and scissors
  • Optional: shellac and a paintbrush

What You Do:
1.    Roll the cookie dough out, cut out holiday shapes, and use the straw to poke a hole at the top of each shape.
2.    Bake according to package directions. Let cool.
3.    Decorate with frosting, sugar and dragees.
4.    Let cookies sit out, uncovered, overnight or until frosting dries and hardens.
5.    Tie a loop of ribbon through each hole.
6.    If desired, coat cookies on each side with shellac and let dry thoroughly. You will be able to reuse the ornaments every year if you do this, but do make sure to hang them out of reach of kids and pets who may not understand that they are no longer edible.
7.    Use to decorate your tree – if any have survived this long!
