These delectable little cookies not only taste like Canada, but they look like it, too! Fluffy puffs of meringue are infused with a delicious maple flavor in this kid-friendly recipe. Your child will be delighted by their snowy-mountain shape, and you'll love introducing him to the kitchen. Watching his favorite winter event will be that much sweeter with the company of these pure maple treats!
What You Need:
- 4 egg whites
- ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
- ¾ cup white granulated sugar
- ¼ cup confectioner’s sugar
- ½ teaspoon maple extract
What You Do:
- Pre-heat your oven to 300° F.
- Ask your child to place parchment paper on a cookie sheet.
- Using a glass or metal bowl, show him how to whip the egg whites with the cream of tartar until it begins to look foamy.
- As you are whipping the egg whites, have him gradually add the white sugar and confectioner’s sugar in increments of a couple of tablespoons at a time. Using an electric mixer is always easier, but you can certainly do this by hand. Your arm will get a good workout!
- After the sugars are all incorporated, ask him to add the maple extract. Whip it into the mixture.
- Invite him to use a tablespoon to scoop a dollop of the mixture and place it on the parchment paper, so it looks like a circle. Repeat until the tray is full.
- Place the cookie sheet in the oven and immediately reduce the heat to 250° F.
- Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the cookies look crunchy and dry.
- When finished, remove from the tray and let cool. Enjoy the small, sweet puffs of maple snow!
