Make a splash with this delightful and educational word fishing game. Your second grader will create a colorful art project that will serve as the board for a challenging word game. Happy fishing!
What You Need:
- Blue construction paper
- White construction paper
- Purple construction paper
- Orange construction paper
- List of vocabulary words
- Cardboard
- Black pen
- Scissors
- Timer
- White glue
- Velcro circles
What You Do:
- Have your child cut out a wavy ocean out of the blue construction paper.
- Let him use a pencil to draw a boat and sails on the white paper, a mast on the purple paper, and at least thirty fish on the orange paper.
- Have him cut out his drawings.
- Now to assemble the sail boat! Have your child glue the purple mast to the white boat before attaching two sails on the mast.
- Once he's put it together, glue the boat on the blue water.
- Have your child glue the water and boat pieces on a piece of cardboard.
- Help him trim the cardboard so it is the same size as the blue construction paper ocean.
- Take one velcro circle and peel the two sides apart.
- Place one velcro side on the sail boat. Set aside its pair.
- Place five more velcro sides on the blue construction paper. Set aside their pairs.
- Write one word from your vocabulary list on each fish. Aim for variety with your list. The more vocabulary words, the better.
- Take the velcro pairs that you set aside in step #10 and place on the back of each fish.
- Help your child cut out small circles from the white construction paper.
- Look out your list of vocabulary words. Write down all the beginning letters of the words from your list.
- Write each beginning letter on its own small circle.
- Attach velcro backs to each small circle.
- Time to start word fishing! Ask your child to choose a letter from your list of beginning letters.
- Find the small circle with the letter your child chose and attach it to the velcro circle on the sail boat.
- Spread all the orange fish on the blue construction paper.
- Tell your child to take away all the fish words that do not start with the same letter as the one on the sail boat.
- Start the timer.
- When your child finishes, stop the timer.
- Keep playing with new letters. After each round, record his time and watch for improvement.
As your child learns new words, add them to his pile of fish! You can even make the game more difficult by requiring him to define each word that he "fishes" from the ocean.
