Activity
Fall Symbol Connection
Introduce your child to the symbols of the fall season with this easy-to-assemble connecting lines matching game. Matching activities are a great way to hone observational skills and increase your kid's attention span, which will be essential to success in elementary school. As a bonus, she’ll even get practice drawing lines, great fine motor practice which will ultimately help with her handwriting!
What You Need:
- Poster board
- Marker
- Glue stick
- Computer
- Printer
- Printer paper
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Help your child load your printer full of printer paper.
- Then, take over duties and connect to the Internet.
- Locate a website that contains royalty free clip art.
- Next, search for 10 fall-related objects (leaves, pumpkins, turkeys, etc.) and 10 non-fall related objects.
- Download these images to your computer.
- Place all of these images into a single PDF or Word document. Be sure to make sure each object is about 1 inch by 1 inch big. Also, be sure to include each fall image twice in your document (for a total of 30 objects in your document).
- Print the document.
- Have your child take over duties again. Using the scissors, she should very carefully cut out each shape.
- Then, using the glue stick, help her glue all of the shapes to the poster board in a random manner.
- Hand her the marker and explain that she should draw a line connecting each fall item to its match.
- For example, if you printed off a pair of pumpkins, she should draw a line between them. If you printed off a pair of corn stalks, she should draw a line between them.
- The goal is for her to draw a line between each fall pair, while leaving the non-fall items alone.
