5.MD.C Lesson Plans

In this lesson, students will recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and learn to calculate volume by counting cubes. This is a great introduction to the formula V = L x W x H.

Students will apply the formula V = l × w × h to find the volume for rectangular prisms in the context of solving real-world problems.

Students will practice calculating volume as an additive property by making mock hamster mansions from boxes. Groups will calculate the volume of living space that they designed for their hamster in cm³ and document their work.

Students will find volume for rectangular prisms by applying the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h.

Students will begin to calculate volume of different rectangular prisms using base ten cubes and then transition to using the formula V = L x W x H. Students will then practice using the legendary fifth grade activity, Cootie Catchers.
