Worksheet

First Page Challenge

You can learn a lot about a book from its first page! In this worksheet, students will read just the first page of a book, then answer a series of prompts. Learners are asked why they chose the book, if they want to keep reading it, what they learned after reading the first page, and what they predict the story is about.

As students read and reflect on the first page of their book, they can consider what makes for a strong beginning and what techniques the author is using to tell their story. These ideas can then be applied to students’ own writing to hook the readers! Learners can also feel empowered as they choose their own books to read and define their tastes.
