Genre Explorer

Head off on a genre journey with this fun reading challenge! This checklist challenges upper elementary students to read a book from eight different genres: biography, fantasy, graphic novel, historical fiction, horror, mystery, nonfiction, poetry, realistic fiction, and science fiction. Readers are also asked to mark the genre they read most often, the genre that is their favorite, and the genre they want to try.

This activity encourages students to explore their library and branch out into new genres. Learners can find books on their own, identify authors and topics they’re interested in, and become familiar with the unique characteristics of different genres. Allowing students to choose their own books can foster a curiosity and an enthusiasm for reading that can last a lifetime.
