Take a break from dyeing eggs and crack one open to make this silly and simple egg shell planter. Your child will get to learn about the life cycle of plants along with decorating this egg to look like a newborn chick. In less time than it takes to boil an egg, you could make an egghead garden for your windowsill!
What You Need:
- Eggs
- Permanent markers
- 2 wiggle eyes
- Tacky glue
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Clay
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
- Grass seeds
- Potting soil
What You Do:
- Head to the kitchen to show your child how to crack an egg. Aim for making the crack about 3/4 of the way up on the egg. You'll only need the shells, so crack the eggs in a bowl to save for your next meal!
- Gently wash the egg out with water and dab it dry.
- Next, your child can get creative and use markers to decorate the eggshells with mouths, eyes and a collar.
- Squeeze some tacky glue to the backs of the googly eyes, and place them onto the egghead's face.
- Whether you're creating a monster or a cute duckling, adding construction paper features makes your egghead more lifelike. If your child is making a bird, have her cut out a small triangle out of construction paper and fold it in half. Then glue it to the egghead's face for the beak.
- Have your child pinch a piece of clay into a small bowl, and gently press the egghead into it, to make a holder. She can also use bits of clay to add some details, like legs or feet. Let it dry overnight.
- If your child wants more color, she can now paint the dried clay base to add more color.
- Once everything is dry, spoon a few scoops of potting soil into the egghead, and place a few grass seeds into the soil.
- Now your child can lightly water her egghead every day and watch the grass shoot up to create a wacky head of hair.
This "eggcellent" craft will look great for several weeks!
