Instead of a store bought card, help your child to make a unique tie themed card for dad this Father’s Day. Cut and color a special tie shape, add fabric or paints, and complete the custom greeting with a hand crafted poem.
What You Need:
- Card stock
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Markers
- Ruler
- Clear drying, non-toxic glue
- Temper paint and brush
- Fabric or felt scraps
- Optional: Glitter or sequins
What You Do:
- Place an 8 by 10 or larger piece of cardstock vertically and fold from top to bottom.
- Draw a tie shape with the top of the tie touching the top of the paper fold. If your child is struggling to draw, break the tie into smaller geometric pieces such as a square or octagon for the top, a long rectangle for the middle, and triangle for the bottom. Measure the lines with a ruler to make them equal.
- Cut the tie out, leaving it attached at the top.
- Decorate the front of the card. Draw a striped or diamond shaped pattern with markers or try a more abstract paint splatter. If your child is making a pattern or geometric shapes use the ruler to make straight lines and measurements.
- Add cut pieces of fabric or felt with glue for texture.
- Optional: Create some sparkle by gluing glitter or sequins to the tie.
- Set aside to dry.
- After the card is dry, open it up and write your own poem especially for dad. Younger children can try a few rhyming lines and older kids can pen a haiku or other more complex writing.
This thoughtful activity also doubles as a learning project where your child can practice basic math skills. Young children can learn about simple geometric shapes and patterns, while older students can try some addition, subtraction, and measurement making.
