Make a Mother's Day Necklace!
Topics: Fourth Grade, Math
This hands-on project gives your child practice using math skills to make a beaded necklace. It will strengthen his understanding of problem solving, patterning, estimating and measuring. For your child, the best part of this activity is that after he’s finished he’ll have a wonderful Mother’s Day gift for a special mom, grandmother, or aunt.
-
Beads in various colors and shapes
-
String for a necklace
-
Necklace clasp (optional)
- Let your child select the beads he wants to use for a necklace. Suggest that he use different colors and/or shapes to make a pattern. He may want to lay them out on the table and experiment with different combinations.
- Help your child prepare the string. Decide on the length. Allow enough string for the necklace to be pulled over a person’s head unless you are using a type of clasp. Cut the desired amount. Work with your child to estimate if he has enough beads to make a necklace.
- Now it's time to string the beads on the necklace using the chosen pattern. Tie the ends of the string together when completed. If you are using a clasp, attach it to each end of the string. Wear your Mother's Day necklace with pride!
