Make something special for mom on Mother’s Day by recycling some paper tubes and the help of colorful tissue paper. Mom will be pleased to use her napkin rings not just for Mother’s Day brunch, but over and over!
What You Need:
- Paper tube
- Tissue paper
- Glue
- Water
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Small container
- Garbage bag
What You Do:
- Start by helping your child collect paper towel and toilet paper tubes from around the house. Instead of tossing them out, they can be re-used to create this special gift for mom!
- Offer your child a pair of scissors and invite her to cut the rolls into 2" rings. She can use a ruler to measure the lengths, encouraging her math skills!
- Now invite your child to select four of the rings to use for creating a set of Mother’s Day napkin rings. She can also mix together equal amounts of glue and water – about 1 tablespoon of each – in a small container.
- Before getting messy, encourage your child to tear colorful tissue paper into small bits, about 1 inch in size, honing her fine motor skills. She can use mom’s favorite colors!
- Help cover the work area with a plastic bag and invite your child to begin coating the outside of the rolls with the glue water mixture using a brush and then layering on the tissue paper. She can create napkin rings of a solid color or random hues.
- Encourage your child to keep working until the whole set of Mother’s Day napkin rings are complete! Allow them to dry for a couple of hours. Offer your child a scissors to cut any pieces of tissue paper hanging over the edges of the napkin rings.
- All that’s left is to set the table for a Mother’s Day brunch highlighted with fresh linens threaded through the colorful Mother’s Day napkin rings!
