Play Turtle Tag
Topics: Preschool, Kindergarten, First Grade, Outdoor
Children will love this new twist on an old game. In addition to being fun – and requiring children to think about how turtles move – it teaches problem solving. From a physical standpoint, this game provides tons of practice with running (and falling!), as well as moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise.
What You Do:
- As with the traditional game of tag, one child is “It” and trying to catch the remaining players.
- If a child is being chased, she can be “safe” by lying on her back like an upside-down turtle.
- If “It” hasn’t tagged someone in a certain amount of time (say, a minute and a half), give the signal that means “It” should get into the turtle position.
- Choose another child to be “It” and start again!
You can add a cooperative element to this game by requiring the “turtles” to remain on the ground until another player comes along to help them up!
