All those random bits and pieces of construction paper can be rolled into colorful paper beads, which your child can string together into lots of fun things. With the help of some glue and a chopstick, she can get rolling on a fun and functional art project!
What You Need:
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Paintbrush
- Chopstick
What You Do:
- Help your child to gather some used construction paper in different colors and sizes.
- Invite her to cut long rectangles and diamonds about 6 inches in length, and no wider than 2 inches.
- Now invite her to put a coating of glue on one side of the paper. She can use a paintbrush to equally distribute the glue.
- Offer your child a chopstick to use for rolling the paper. Invite her to start at one end and carefully begin rolling the paper around the chopstick.
- Once she gets to the end of the paper, she can secure the bead by adding a couple of drops of glue.
- Invite her to keep cutting and rolling different shapes and lengths of paper to see how it changes the shapes of her beads, encouraging her creativity and problem solving skills!
Did You Know: The art of making paper beads dates back to the Victorian times during the mid to late 1800s, when women would use scraps of wallpaper to create unique beads. Often, the finished beads would be strung with string and used to make decorative beaded curtains.
