Play "Who Am I?" to Remember Dr. King
Topics: Fourth Grade, Writing
How much does your child know about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.? You can help your child to truly understand why we celebrate his life each year. One way to do this is by researching his life and using the facts to create a game called "Who Am I?"
What You Need:
2-3 sheets lined paper
biographical book or article about Dr. King
What You Do:
Step 1
Take your child to the library, or go online, and ask them to research answers to the following questions:
1. When was Dr. King born?
2. What was the main idea of his "I Have a Dream" speech?
3. Why did Dr. King lead conferences around the country?
4. What were the current ideas about slavery during the last few years of his life?
5. Why was the Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama important?
6. How was Dr. King affected by John F. Kennedy?
7. What do you think was Dr. King's most inspiring accomplishment in the fight for racial equality?
Step 2
Have your child write one index card for each of the research questions. Then have her write an answer card for each question using words or phrases. Mix up the question cards and place them in a hat.
Step 3
Ask each family member draw a question card and try to answer it. If answer correctly the player gets to keep the card. If answered incorrectly, the card is put back in the hat and remains there until it is correctly answered.
Step 4
After the game, discuss a possible family project to do each year to honor Dr. King's life, such as serving at a local soup kitchen or volunteering at a nursing home. This is a fun way to help your child celebrate Dr. King's life!
