Students will learn about three nonfiction text features: charts, graphs, and diagrams. They will analyze and interpret the information represented in these visual forms and discover how they aid in the comprehension of nonfiction texts.

Knock, knock! It’s the U.S. Census Bureau! In this lesson plan, students analyze primary sources in the form of census data to do research that helps them answer questions about famous people and the time period during which they lived.

Make the number work for you! Use this lesson to teach your students to add mixed numbers with like denominators using the strategy of decomposition.

Teach your students to subtract mixed numbers with like denominators using the strategy of decomposition. This strategy helps students to manipulate and break down numbers to help them solve tricky subtraction problems.

Teach your students to create equivalent fractions by multiplying by different fraction forms of 1 whole like 2/2 or 4/4. This lesson also includes drafts of area models.

All fictional stories have story elements but they sure can differ between stories. In this lesson, students will compare and contrast the story elements of two fictional stories and document their findings in a graphic organizer.

It’s time to learn a new strategy! Teach your students to use the partial quotients strategy to solve long division problems with one-digit divisors and no remainder.

Teach your students to multiply decimals using the standard algorithm.

When students read nonfiction texts, they will need to make inferences using text features and quotes as evidence. Support your students using short texts as practice before diving into more complex materials like textbooks.

Teach your students to round to the thousands place using number lines.

Teach your students to find the perimeter of polygons using real world examples. They will make polygon pictures using tangrams and practice finding the perimeters of the polygons in their masterpieces.

Students will learn to model mixed number subtraction with manipulatives using this hands-on lesson plan.

How well do your students know decimals? In this lesson, introduce your students to decimal multiplication using models.

Teach your students to draw an array using base ten notation to solve multiplication problems with two two-digit factors.

Keep it simple! Teach your students to write a summary using the Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then frame for analyzing a story.

Teach your students to add mixed numbers and improper fractions with the same denominator using the counting up strategy with number lines.

Make math colorful! Teach your students to find the factors of a number using the factor rainbow strategy.

Give your students practice with inferences using short fictional texts before asking them to apply the skill to a longer text of their choice.

Teach your students to add and subtract fractions with like denominators using a strategy that works for both operations: converting mixed numbers into improper fractions and back again!

Fractions are in everyday life! This lesson reviews how to solve word problems involving fractions using tape diagrams. The problems include addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions.

Getting ready to add fractions? This lesson reviews how to add fractions with unlike denominators using number lines. Students will focus on understanding the process and reasoning behind each step.

It's as easy as one, two, three...four! Introduce your students to subtracting decimals in the tenth and hundredth place using a four-step process.

In this lesson, students will add three-digit numbers using expanded form addition and standard algorithm addition. They'll explain their answers and highlight the steps for each of the strategies.

Teach your students to interpret multiplication as scaling. In this lesson, students will learn to predict the size of a product, using one factor as scale.

Help your students flex their vocabulary muscles with this lesson on using context clues. By deciphering the meanings of different nonsense words, young readers will greatly improve their comprehension skills.

Kids will love learning some fun facts about elephants while developing their reading comprehension skills. Using T-charts and Venn diagrams, they'll analyze stories and explore different characteristics of fiction and nonfiction.

Not all nonfiction texts on the same topic are created equal! Using this lesson plan, your class will become familiar with nonfiction features by comparing and contrasting texts on a shared topic.

It's time for some fun with grid puzzles! In this lesson, students will learn how to solve KenKen puzzles using logic and applying their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills.

Using your acting skills and a great book by Chris Van Allsburg, you will lead your students on an adventure to compare characters and events throughout a book.

Did you know that comparative tasks improve comprehension and help students develop higher order thinking skills? In this lesson, students will compare nonfiction texts on the same topic using Venn diagrams and performance!
