Nothing says the holidays like decorated sugar cookies. These yummy felt craft cookie ornaments are the perfect activity for snowy winter afternoons. Your child will practice creativity while brushing up on her sewing skills and creating ornaments that your family can enjoy for years to come!
What You Need:
- Multiple colors of felt sheets
- Scissors
- Sewing needle
- Thread
- Batting or cotton balls
- Cookie cutters
- Marker
- Ribbon
- Fabric paint or fabric pen (optional)
- seed beads, paints and other craft items for decorating the "cookies" (optional)
What You Do:
- Using cookie cutters and the marker, have your child trace the cookie shapes onto the felt two times each onto white or tan felt. This makes the cookie part of the craft.
- Staying to the outer edge of the outlines, ask her to cut out the cookie shapes.
- Have her decide which cookies she wants 'frosted', and which ones she just wants to decorate. For the frosted cookies, trace the cookie cutter shapes again, but onto brightly colored felt this time.
- Ask your child to cut out the frosting shapes, staying to the inside of the traced line. Make these shapes a little smaller than the pieces used for the actual cookie pieces.
- Using a thread and needle, have her hand stitch the frosting onto the front of cookie.
- Take both sides of the cookie cut-outs, place them back to back. Mark off a couple of inches along one side to leave open, to use later when turning the cookie back to the right side out.
- Have your child sew the two sides together. Include a loop of ribbon at the top as you go to create a way to hang the ornaments.
- Lightly fill the cookies with either cotton batting or torn cotton balls.
- Finish sewing the cookies closed.
- Sew tiny beads (seed beads) onto the front of the cookies as sprinkles. Use paint or fabric markers to add color and detail.
- Allow to dry, and then hang on your tree to enjoy!
