It's okay to play with your food when an Abraham Lincoln-inspired log cabin is your goal! In this charming President's Day activity, kids get to participate in cooking up healthy whole wheat pancakes, then use their building skills to construct a pancake log cabin that Abe Lincoln himself would be proud of. Cooking together is a great way to spend time with your kids, and helps build their fine motor skills, too.
What You Need:
- 1 1/3 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup plain non-fat yogurt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1-3 teaspoons honey (depending on how sweet you want them)
- 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced
- Large mixing bowl
- Small mixing bowl
- Griddle or frying pan
- Chef's knife (for cutting the pancakes)
- Plate
- Toothpicks
- Butter knife (optional)
- Graham crackers or chocolate bars (optional)
- Peanut butter (optional)
