In this 5th grade division unit, students will take their understanding to the next level by applying division skills with multi-digit numbers. Students will also begin to explore division with decimals and practice using estimation to check the reasonableness of their answers. Last, students will use their knowledge of the base ten number system to divide decimals by base ten exponents (i.e. .4 ➗ 104).

Division 2

In this unit, students will build on their understanding of decimals by working with numbers that include decimals in tenths, hundredths and thousandths place. Adding, subtracting and rounding with decimals will enable them to apply the strategies in new ways and enhance their understanding of the base-ten number system.

Decimals

In this first guided lesson on numbers 0 to 10, kids will be taught rote count sequence and numeral recognition. The lesson has been designed to introduce numbers in a scaffolded way, by first starting with a slow-paced numeral recognition exercise and progressing to a faster pace as the lesson continues. This technique helps build a stronger foundation of math skills.

Numbers 0 to 10 Level 1

Teach kindergarteners all about the numbers 0 to 10 with this guided lesson which focuses not only on recognizing numbers, but beginning to understand their value. Each exercise aims to illustrate the values behind each number in an engaging way, making early math a fun occasion. Numbers 0 to 10 Level 2

Understanding our base-ten number system is the foundation for many skills to come. In this unit, students will add on to their understanding of place value and extend to the millions! They will also learn how to read, write and order larger numbers, in addition to decimals to the tenths and hundredths.

Number Sense 4

Multiplication is essentially repeated addition, or growing numbers by doubling, tripling, quadrupling, and so on. This unit presents mental models and strategies that help students learn and review the concept of multiplication. Students explore multiplication using arrays, partial products, doubling methods and the standard algorithm to solve numerical and word problems. Students will multiply whole numbers and simple decimals by base ten exponents (i.e. .3 x 103).

Multiplication 3

This year, first graders will be introduced to place value and our base 10 number system, usually by starting with 2-digit numbers (100 or less). This guided lesson helps introduce place value to first graders through instruction and examples targeted to this skill. Place Value 1

Understanding how our ten number system works enables students to see interesting and useful patterns and relationships in these math activities. These patterns allow students to develop more efficient mental math strategies when multiplying by multiples of 10 or 100. Students will also review rounding and apply this skill to larger numbers - up to 100,000’s place.

Number Sense 3

Words are the wondrous building blocks in language. This unit increases students’ word knowledge by introducing more challenging vocabulary and exploring how words are related. Learners will also discover some of the ways words are constructed using derivational root words, prefixes, suffixes, and compound words. Students will get to explore and create fun literary devices such as similes, idioms and metaphors.

Word Meaning 2

The story "My Shadow" provides the backdrop for this guided lesson on the letters I, M and J. Learning to read letter by letter allows children to focus not only on letter recognition, but on the sounds that the letters make in context. This technique provides the building blocks for reading fluency to come in kindergarten and first grade. Kids can continue their phonics practice with the accompanying worksheets.

My Shadow

Words are like legos - they can have interchangeable parts. In this unit students will study the construction of words including roots, prefixes and suffixes. Students will also explore how to modify words to make them possessive, a different part of speech and adjust to signify singular and plural. Understanding the basic building blocks of words, will increase students’ vocabulary, improve their spelling and add strategies for decoding unfamiliar words.

Word Structure 2

Sentences are the building blocks of paragraphs. A sentence is a complete thought that can stand alone and in this unit students will learn what comprises a complete sentence and how to identify a fragment, or incomplete sentence. They will explore different kinds of sentences and how to punctuate them. And, to sharpen their craft, students will learn how to spice up their own writing by adding sentence pattern variety.

Sentences 3

In this introduction to numbers 0-20, kids practice what they've already learned about the numbers 0-10 and build new skills in counting 11-20. Not only will preschoolers practice recognizing these numerals, but they will also be given rote count to 20 exercises to reinforce skills. Approaching numbers in a scaffolded way such as this helps build math fluency and boosts confidence.

Numbers 11 to 20 Level 1

This geometry unit engages students in analytical thinking as they learn about the properties of two dimensional figures and consider the different ways they can be sorted based on those properties. Students also learn to plot points, lines and shapes on a coordinate graph.

Geometry 7

This lesson is a continuation of place value practice, and offers more instruction on identifying tens and ones in 2-digit numbers. Once first graders are able to quickly identify place value they are then able to understand on a deeper level what larger numbers actually mean. This is crucial for the math fluency that will support higher-level concepts in the later grades.

Place Value 2

This guided lesson focuses on short U, as in jump, sun, and duck. Kids learn how to recognize and read this sound, then practice with short U words. Breaking up lessons based on vowel sounds helps kids chunk concepts together, easing retention and boosting phonics skills. Once you are through with the lesson, consider downloading some of the accompanying short U printables for extended learning.

Short U 1

Understanding how to pronounce the short I sound, such as in pill and film, is important for first graders encountering words they don't know. This guided lesson teaches kids all about the Short I sound, and provides lots of examples of short I words. Targeted practice like this helps to reinforce kids' understanding of short vowel sounds and boosts phonemic awareness, upon which lifelong reading skills are based.
