Understanding our base-ten number system is the foundation for many skills to come. In this unit, students will add on to their understanding of place value and extend to the millions! They will also learn how to read, write and order larger numbers, in addition to decimals to the tenths and hundredths.

Learning three-digit numbers can be a challenging part of the math curriculum for many second graders. This lesson helps to support second graders' understanding of larger numbers by teaching them place value. Kids will compare three-digit numbers and learn to count up to 1000 with guided instruction. When the lesson is finished, consider printing out the corresponding worksheets recommended by our curriculum designers.

First graders' fluidity with comparing numbers is an important building block for the higher-level math concepts to come in the later grades. You can give first graders a leg up with this lesson, featuring guided instruction and practice problems in comparing numbers. Once kids get through this lesson, you can download and print the suggested comparing numbers worksheets in order to provide even more opprotunities for practice.

Kindergarteners build upon their number skills in this guided lesson which focuses on the numbers 11 to 20. Not only will kids learn to identify numbers, but also begin to associate them with certain values. It's an important concept for young mathematicians that requires lots of practice. You can give kids even more chances to extend learning with the accompanying numbers printables.

Teaching number sense gives kids a deeper understanding of our number system, which will in turn prepare them for the algebraic equations to come in the upper elementary grades and middle school. You can create a strong foundational knowledge of number sense with this guided lesson, which provides third graders with targeted instruction and exercises designed by our team of curriculum experts.

This lesson is a continuation of place value practice, and offers more instruction on identifying tens and ones in 2-digit numbers. Once first graders are able to quickly identify place value they are then able to understand on a deeper level what larger numbers actually mean. This is crucial for the math fluency that will support higher-level concepts in the later grades.

Multiplication is essentially repeated addition, or growing numbers by doubling, tripling, quadrupling, and so on. This unit presents mental models and strategies that help students learn and review the concept of multiplication. Students explore multiplication using arrays, partial products, doubling methods and the standard algorithm to solve numerical and word problems. Students will multiply whole numbers and simple decimals by base ten exponents (i.e. .3 x 103).

Knowing how to build numbers is an important lesson for kindergarteners just getting their feet wet with counting and numbers. These guided exercises can give kids a deeper understanding of number sense, numerical order, and values. Kindergarteners will begin to associate values with numbers and comprehend the concepts of greater than and less than, building upon skills they will need in the later grades.

This year, first graders will be introduced to place value and our base 10 number system, usually by starting with 2-digit numbers (100 or less). This guided lesson helps introduce place value to first graders through instruction and examples targeted to this skill. If your child finishes the lesson and needs more practice with place value, download and print the accompanying worksheets suggested by our curriculum team.
