Cranberries are a tart and healthy berry, perfect for making jelly! Your child can learn more about making jelly while creating this healthy Thanksgiving spread.

What You Need:

  • 4 c cranberries
  • 2 c sugar
  • 1 whole lemon
  • Zester
  • Measuring spoons
  • Paring knife
  • Medium saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Ladle
  • Clean glass jars with lids

What You Do:

  1. Invite your child to carefully use a paring knife to cut the cranberries in half and then place in the medium saucepan. Using a knife is a great culinary skill, and requires lots of concentration!
  2. Now your child can measure and add the sugar to the saucepan and set the heat to medium.
  3. While the cranberries are simmering, your child can use a zester to make 1 teaspoon of lemon zest and then add it to the saucepan.
  4. Encourage your child to give things a good stir with the spatula making sure all the cranberries and sugar are mixed together.
  5. Now she can set the kitchen timer for 20 minutes and let the cranberries simmer away.
  6. While the cranberry jelly is boiling, your child can get out the glass jars with lids she is planning on using for her jelly and make sure things are very clean and dry.
  7. Once the cranberries have simmered for 20 minutes, she can carefully give things another stir. She can set the timer for another 20 minutes, giving things a stir as needed.
  8. Now she can turn off the heat and let the jelly cool for about 10 minutes before ladling into clean glass jars. Your child can secure the lids and let the jelly sit on the kitchen counter until it reaches room temperature, and then place in the fridge.
