Happy New Year! Celebrate by making this sparkly New Year’s hat with your preschooler. Take this opportunity to explain to your preschooler why we celebrate New Year's: the calendar year has ended and we are beginning a brand new one! She'll learn about time and the calendar and get some great fine motor practice while she's at it.
What You Need:
- 9" x 18" piece of construction paper or two 8.5" x11" sheets taped together
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Stapler
- Glue
- Glitter
- Sequins
- Markers
- Yarn
- Hole punch
What You Do:
- Place the paper in front of your child, oriented vertically. Using the pencil, help your child draw a large semi-circle along the bottom edge of the paper.
- Have her cut the semi-circle out. Show her how the semi-circle rolls up into a cone, but don't staple it just yet.
- Help your child glue sequins all over the hat and make squiggly decorations with markers.
- Write the new year on the face of the hat in glue. Sprinkle glitter over the glue and shake off the excess. Allow to dry.
- Roll the paper into a cone-shaped hat and staple into place.
- To make a chin strap, punch two holes on either side of the hat. String a length of yarn through one of the holes and tie a knot, then place the hat on your child's head. String the other end of the yarn through the opposite hole and adjust so the hat fits snugly on her head, then tie a knot to secure.
Wear the hat to welcome the New Year!
